Cracked heels are a rather common problem around the back and sides of the heel where the skin splits and it may become painful and even get infected. They usually happen when the skin around that area becomes dry and thick, so can easily split. That dry cracked skin will not heal and puts pressure on the normal skin below and may ‘tear’. The treatment of cracked heels is to remove that thicker and dryer skin and then use emollients or creams to soften the skin to make it more flexible.
